Mould and Fungi

WHAT IS MOULD?

Mould is part of the fungi group. Mould produces tiny particles called spores in order to reproduce. Spores are carried in the air and may cause health problems if inhaled by people who are sensitive or allergic to them.

Many different types of mould exist and all of them have the potential to cause health problems.

WHERE DOES MOULD GROW?

 Mould can be found on:
• Wallpaper • Walls • Tiles • Furniture • Ceilings • Clothes • Insulation Material • Wood

It can grow in wet or moist areas of places where there is no adequate ventilation. Mould is also commonly caused by a water source such as a plumbing leak, sewage problem or a roof leak and can spread quickly throughout your home or office.

WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF EXCESS OF MOULD?

Some moulds are toxic and can leave you susceptible to several diseases and health issues.

Irritation of eyes Asthma Allergies Irritation to skin Runny nose Sinus problems

Can’t I just remove mould myself?

If you have a very mild case of mould, you can try the usual remedies such as supermarket strength mould remover, a solution of vinegar diluted in water or a mild detergent. If this is not effective, you can try a diluted bleach solution (be sure to wear appropriate PPE and make sure the area is well-ventilated.) However, if you have a more severe or widespread mould problem, you should call a professional to avoid exposure to the mould spores and the chemicals used to treat them.

What should you be aware of?

  • Sometimes, trying to treat mould yourself can make the problem worse. By disturbing the mould colonies, a huge number of spores can be released into the air, which results in greater contamination.
  • Not all mould is detectable. You can have a mould problem without any visible signs of a mould colony or infestation.
  • Most mould growth resulting from temporary water damage is not a severe and your property can usually be restored to its original condition. However, airborne mould is far more serious and hiring a professional is the only course of action to completely and safely remove it.

How do professionals get rid of mould?

To effectively treat and remove mould contamination, trained biohazard technicians and specialized equipment is needed. Not all mould spores are visible. If not treated effectively, mould continues to grow and spread. The Zero BioClean trained professionals conduct a full assessment of your area of concern to understand the source of the mould and to determine the extent to which it has spread.

The team also uses their experience to understand where non-visible mould may be growing. The affected areas are then vacuumed with a HEPA filter which captures 99.7% of all mould spores. The contaminated area is then treated with industrial strength and hospital grade disinfectants with specialized fogging equipment to destroy any remaining, non-visible mould spores and to prevent the spread of mould to other areas. For mould clean up, remediation, and restoration, Zero BioClean technicians follow IICRC standards and use high quality equipment and disinfectant solutions to ensure your property is clean and fresh and smells it too.
